You can’t open a newspaper or click anywhere online these days without being faced with some angry feminist spouting about how equality has been hampered and they are not being afforded the same rights as the male members of the species. It all kicked off, in my opinion, with the ‘Slane Girl’ incident. That caused huge repercussions. Then of course there was Cheryl Cole’s tattoo. “But she’s so pretty, why would she want to do that to her body?”, was the main sentence uttered by the internet after pictures of her new tattoo appeared. Eh….because it’s her body and she can do what she wants with it! How can one claim to be a feminist and then come out with remarks like that? Mind = blown.
Then this ad appeared online last week. Samsung who are one the leading manufactures in the world and in my humble opinion should know better put this ad out on the internet. It’s for a new computer product which makes your computer go faster.
The world went into crazy mode when the ad was launched. I can see why – kind of. First off, the acting and voice over work is shocking. That aside, the ad, whether it means to or not, degrades women. Now, it can be argued that the woman is meant to represent a “housewife” and that “housewives” are not very technology savvy (I know a few housewives who would have something to say about that). The problem with the ad is not only that is portrays the woman as simple and stupid but that the men in the ad are the ones who know all about the PC stuff and are filmed “at the office” or use the technical jargon while the woman is filmed in the kitchen. Really Samsung, didn’t these gender stereotypes disappear back in the 70’s???
The feminists of the world are united in their sheer disgust against this ad and all that they believe it stands for. So much so that the ad has been taken down off the official Samsung YouTube channel. My question would have to be this though: What is it that makes people so angry? Is it that Samsung dares to challenge the status quo of the world and in their eyes fail? What is it that has people so offended?
In my opinion, yes Samsung made a bad decision when they decided to use a humble housewife and portray her as a simpleton who knew nothing. Their worst decision though was making their actors speak like they were talking to two years olds! That I can’t forgive them for.
