Chances are, if you’ve got a Facebook and you’re Irish, someone you know has posted a link to one of the videos by Plae Pen Productions, the brainchild of Wexford chaps David Atkinson and Kristian McGrath.
Now, it might be considered cheating that I’m featuring these two Youtubers because I’ve known Kristian for years, but their videos are quality and have notched up more than 100,000 hits. With 617 subscribers, their channel has seen something of a genesis of late: beginning as a news-sketch show, the lads have since found an audience with very Irish-centric content, capitulating on the ever-growing popularity of ‘list-type’ content and the ‘things people say’ trend.
Their two most popular videos are well worth a look.
With no sense of shame, the lads have no problem making a fool of themselves in the name of entertainment. Their videos average about 2,000 hits, but their channel is amassing a steady fanbase with regular features on Joe.ie, Her.ie, and support in the forms of Irish Youtube-extraordinaire, Clisare. As well as that, they’ve seen their production values grow with a collaboration with Highwinds Media, a media-production company based in Wexford. This collaboration brought their first mockumentary about Irish chavs, narrated by David ‘Shatinbritches’.
On Monday, Plae Pen began a dedicated project of one sketch a day for a week. Can they do it? Most likely. Expect lots of silly humour, eye-rolling jokes, and chav-mocking in lieu of social commentary from a pair who may someday find themselves as a feature on the Republic of Telly.
