Because there’s no such thing as too much alliteration, we are delighted to announce that the 2015 Christmas Comedy Carnival will be taking place in the basement of Cassidy’s of Westmoreland St. on Saturday the 21st of November (doors open at 8pm).
For those not in the know, the Cassidy’s Christmas Comedy Carnival is an annual stand up comedy night set up to aid the Santa Strike Force. The SSF are a specially mobilised team of charity workers who’s mission is to help kids who are hospitalised over the Christmas period by raising funds to purchase life-changing (and often life-saving) equipment. Some of the charities who the Santa Strike Force have worked alongside in the past include The Saoirse Foundation, The Bumbelance and Barnardos.
Last year, the Christmas Comedy Carnival raised €1,800 for the cause, a record high for the gig. As admission to the Comedy Carnival is free, funds are raised exclusively by raffle tickets sales (details on the fabulous prizes later), surprise auctions and the generous donations of show attendees and well-wishers.
Now that you know why we run the show every year, let us tell you a bit about the wonderful Cassidy’s Christmas Comedy Carnival Comedians who will be there to entertain you on the night!
Gerry McBride is one of Ireland’s leading satirists and one of the main writers for the global phenomenon that is Waterford Whisper News (which recently pipped Krank.ie to the Best Daily Online Publication prize at the Realex Web Awards, so they must be good!). In addition to having the world’s best job as a writer for a satirical news website, Gerry is also the man behind the infamous prawn ring fiasco – who better than him to be our headline act!
Because they were one of the show stealers at last year’s Comedy Carnival, Ireland’s oldest boy band return to open up the show. The comedic duo of Emmet Quinn and Lorcan Hughes bring a brilliant musical quality to proceedings, making them the perfect opening act. Their songs are catchy and easy to join in with, allowing the audience to get involved with the gig straight away!
Jim Elliot has been with the Christmas Comedy Carnival since day one, having never once missed a gig since it first kicked off about a decade ago. Jim has done it all for the Santa Strike Force; whether he’s performing MC duties or headlining the show, he’s always one of the night’s most well received acts and one which fans are constantly requesting that we get back.
Mr Elliot has recently written and begun performing a brand new set and long term Christmas Comedy Carnival fans will be delighted to know that it is every bit as clever and funny as his classic material, if not more so!
Given that the Christmas Charity Comedy Carnival has been running for a decade and has been fortunate enough to attract so many of Ireland’s top comedic performers (most of whom immediately beg to be added to the following year’s bill once the gig ends), it can be hard to find/make room for new faces. That is why we are so delighted to welcome Martin Angolo, who will make his Comedy Carnival debut, to the fold.
Martin’s quickfire wit and razor sharp reactions, coupled with his boundless on-stage energy and enthusiasm, make him an act to watch out for at this year’s gig and we look forward to seeing him strut his stuff in the Cassidy’s basement.
Also making his Christmas Carnival debut is Danny O’Brien, a man who is loud, brash and, above all, fearless when it comes to comedy. Danny’s natural and dynamic stage presence combined with his willingness to constantly mix things up by trying out new material mean that every DO’B show is a new adventure; you could see this man perform every day for a full week and get seven different shows – he’s just that good!
Sometimes referred to by members of the Irish comedy scene as ‘Mad Uncle Tommy from Navan”, Tommy Nicholson has performed at several Christmas Comedy Carnivals and is one of our most requested comedians. Tommy has a friendly, banterous style and loves to get the audience involved in the show, usually ‘picking on’ people sitting in the front row. But fear not, would be spectators – Uncle Tommy’s sense of humour is as kind-hearted and good-natured as they come, making his set an experience that is as pleasant as it is hysterical.
It’s difficult to describe one of Greg Marks’ comedy shows in mere words. Perhaps the most appropriate thing you could say to anyone about to go see hi would be, “Expect the unexpected!” as there really is telling what this man will do next. Whether he’s doing a Slim Shad-esque rap or marching out on to the stage in a full Darth Vader getup, Mister Marks gives 110% in everything he does.
What surprises has he in store for us this year? There’s only one way to find out!
